The topic of progressive parenting has grown into a worldwide conversation that invites parents, educators, and birth workers to rethink long-held assumptions about family life. What began as informal chats among friends has become a movement shaped by shared stories, careful listening, and a willingness to ask better questions about how we welcome and raise children. The result is a more cultured, more curious community that treats parenting as a journey of learning rather than a fixed set of rules.
At the heart of this work sits a deep respect for the birth experience itself, along with the people who guide families through it. Doulas, midwives, and other birth professionals bring both technical expertise and a calm, gentle presence to one of the most transformative days in a family's story. Their training covers the physiology of labor, the emotions that surface during change, and the practical tricks that help parents feel grounded. The best of them combine knowledge with humor, recognizing that laughter and tears often arrive together.
Long-form radio and podcast formats have become a trusted classroom for parents who want to go beyond surface-level advice. Weekly shows that interview authors and field experts create space for ideas that rarely make it into mainstream media, from new research on infant development to reflections on the cultural scripts we inherit. A deep archive of past episodes turns a single program into an ongoing university of voices, where listeners can browse topics that match their stage of life and return whenever a new question appears.
Workshops, conferences, and live events add a different kind of learning to the mix, one rooted in presence and shared energy. A well-designed training brings together birth professionals and parents for hands-on practice with techniques like rebozo support, comfort measures for labor, and communication skills that strengthen the family team. Speakers who understand the value of both keynotes and small-group discussions help participants leave with renewed confidence, a fresh paradigm for their work, and a list of resources they can revisit long after the slides are put away.
Books and written resources continue to anchor the field, offering a slower, more reflective way to absorb new ideas. Authors who write for parents and birth professionals often blend personal story with research, helping readers see familiar challenges from a wider angle. Blog posts, interviews, and ongoing message boards keep the conversation alive between editions, while online courses make it possible to learn at one's own pace. Together, these formats create a layered path for anyone who wants to deepen their expertise over time.
Across every format, the throughline is a belief in empowerment, love, and the simple power of being truly heard. A community built around birth and parenting tends to value patience over quick fixes, curiosity over certainty, and connection over competition. Sponsors and supporters help keep that ecosystem sustainable, allowing shows, workshops, and resources to remain accessible to families at every stage. When parents feel supported and professionals feel respected, the ripple reaches babies, siblings, and the wider world that holds them.
WORKSHOPS AND CONFERENCES THAT WILL BLOW YOUR MIND
I am most well known for my “Make the Partner Do It” Rebozo Workshop, however, this year I am taking the time to reflect and change my perspective to bring you an even more incredible Rebozo Workshop in 2020.
The good news is that 2020 is all about Flock Yeah!. Two countries. Ten Cities and Twelve Instructors that will change the way you look at your profession. With an option to become a full-time student of Gena’s for the entire year, the 200 seats still available will go quickly.
THE CULTURED DOULA PROGRAM
The idea for the Cultured Doula came to me after years of touring this country and others, teaching doulas. What I discovered was that, when I would bring up an author, a movie, or a prominent speaker in the birth world, my students would have no idea what I was talking about on such subjects. I saw how doulas worldwide were communicating with one another on social media. Some of what I was sharing in my workshops, I thought was common knowledge, and as it turns out it wasn’t …So now, I offer online courses that offer information and community. The course is interactive and allows for mentorship and friendship, not just with me but with others worldwide taking the courses with you.

“Having had the pleasure of experiencing Gena Kirby as an instructor several times, I have learned that her superpower is to hit people square in the heart center with inspiration. You would expect a transformational wisdom ninja to maintain an etheric loftiness. However, what makes Gena’s message so accessible is her wicked humor, her delightful potty mouth, her raw emotions, and her commitment to loving community. “

HI, I’M GENA
I am passionate about parents and their families.
Being a parent is the hardest job you’ll ever have, and I want you to know you are not alone.
I started advocating for parents years ago as the host of a parenting show on the radio in Central California (Progressive Parenting Radio).
